THE INSTITUTE FOR THE STATE AND THE LAW AT THE BAS

is organising a scientific and practical seminar on the topic:

FAMILY JUSTICE IN CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN SOCIETY

The seminar will be held on 26 June from 10.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. in Hall 3 of the Krastyu Tsonchev Training Centre for Lawyers (8 Kaloyan Street). The programme of the seminar can be downloaded HERE.

The ongoing judicial reform focuses public and political attention to a great extent on the internal problems of the system that affect its capacity to deliver justice. Energy is also directed towards the effectiveness of the system in responding to phenomena such as corruption, crime and organised crime. This seems to distance the judicial system from the needs of ordinary people – spouses, children and their parents – and calls into question their access to justice. In this context, we pose the following questions:

1. Is access to justice guaranteed for socially disadvantaged citizens?

2. To what extent and how does mediation contribute to the resolution of family disputes?

3. Is procedural legislation adequate to the need for the fair resolution of family disputes, and

4. Is the prospect of specialisation in the administration of justice for the family and the child realistic?

Colleagues who wish to give a presentation on the topic should send an application to participate in free text, containing the topic and a summary of up to 10 standard typed lines, to: todorova.velina@gmail.com by 17 June 2014. The presentations accepted for participation will be printed in a special issue of the journal Legal Thought.
