Library

The Library of the Institute for the State and the Law is a specialized legal library, established alongside the founding of the Institute in 1947.

As of 2025, the library’s holdings comprise 36,299 volumes, including 21,886 books and 14,404 volumes of periodicals, making it one of the largest research libraries within the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS).

The primary focus of the collection is legal literature, encompassing monographs, textbooks, study guides, statutory collections, judicial practice, dictionaries, reference materials, and periodicals in both Bulgarian and foreign languages. The library is privileged to hold rare books from the Royal Library, as well as volumes from the personal collections of eminent Bulgarian legal scholars, such as Academician Petko Staynov and Academician Lyuben Vasilev.

In addition to legal resources, the library offers literature in philosophy, sociology, history, economics, and related disciplines. Over the decades, this rich collection has consistently supported the academic endeavors of researchers, doctoral students, university faculty, legal professionals, and students.

The library maintains a traditional card catalog (alphabetical, systematic, and shelf list). All materials acquired after 2003 are integrated into an online catalog, accessible via the electronic platform of the Central Library of BAS.
