Institute for the State and the Law

Why a PhD at the ISL?

Because a great scientific idea deserves to be developed and transformed into your own contribution to legal science.

A doctoral program at the Institute for the State and the Law at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (ISL-BAS) offers the opportunity to be part of an active academic environment, to develop your own research methodology, and to turn your academic interest into an in-depth legal study.

The program combines specialized training, independent research, and active involvement in the academic life of the Institute. It provides an opportunity to deepen your knowledge, refine your analytical and argumentation skills, and present your research findings to the academic community.

Academic Development and Research Community

As a PhD student at ISL, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Work under an individual study plan and conduct independent research on your chosen topic;
  • Receive academic supervision and exchange ideas with established scholars and experts;
  • Participate in the research projects of the Institute;
  • Access the specialized library of the Institute;
  • Take part in seminars, conferences, and other academic forums in Bulgaria and abroad to present your research findings;
  • Engage in academic exchange and specialization programs;
  • Publish your research papers in the Institute's publications.

A doctoral program is not just a stage in your academic progression, but an opportunity to become part of a research community where scholarly questions are debated, arguments are tested, and ideas are evolved through academic dialogue.

Doctoral Programs and Training Framework

Training at ISL is conducted across accredited doctoral programmes. It is designed for university graduates holding a Master's degree in Law, and respectively a Master's degree in relevant fields for the "International Law and International Relations" doctoral programme. The training follows an individual study plan and culminates in the acquisition of the educational and scientific degree of "Doctor" (PhD) after a successful defense of a doctoral dissertation before an academic jury.

Choose the Format That Fits Your Needs

The Institute for the State and the Law offers three modes of doctoral study: full-time, part-time, and independent study, with durations of up to three, four, and five years, respectively.
