On 30 June this year, the UN General Assembly elected Assoc. Prof. Velina Todorova a member of the Committee on the Rights of the Child.
The nomination of Assoc. Prof. Velina Todorova by our country and the successful conduct of the campaign are undoubtedly a recognition of her professional qualities. As is well known, Assoc. Prof. Todorova has dedicated a considerable number of scholarly works to issues relating to the protection of children under international law, as well as to the resolution of these issues within our country.
In addition to her research work as a scholar, Assoc. Prof. Todorova is an established lecturer; for two decades now she has taught the discipline “Family and Inheritance Law” at the Faculty of Law of Plovdiv University.
In the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, which is tasked with monitoring the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Assoc. Prof. Todorova will take part in the annual sessions at which the reports of the individual member states of the organisation are discussed. Alongside her election, representatives of Ethiopia, Japan, Bahrain, Austria, Uruguay, the Republic of South Africa, the Russian Federation and Zambia were also elected on 30 June.
We congratulate Assoc. Prof. Todorova and wish her success in her work in this important body of the United Nations.
