A lecture entitled "The Fight against Terrorism and the Protection of Human Rights in the Council of Europe. Selected Case Law of the European Court of Human Rights" was delivered by Prof. Irena Ilieva, PhD, Acting Director of the Institute for the State and the Law and Head of the Department of International Law, on 15 March 2017 at the scientific seminar of the Institute.

The lecture is part of the course that Prof. Irena Ilieva will deliver next week at the Institute of Higher International Studies – Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas University, France. Theoretical questions of the fight against terrorism and respect for human rights, and the "freedom or security" dilemma, were presented. Under the aegis of the Council of Europe a regional international-law regime for combating terrorism has been established, Prof. Ilieva noted. Its main characteristic feature is that the fight against terrorism in the region must be conducted with respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Selected case law of the European Court of Human Rights in the field was presented, including judgments against Bulgaria finding violations.

Those present included members of the Bulgarian Diplomatic Society, scholars from the Institute, doctoral students, students from Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" and citizens interested in the topic.
