Conference dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of the Signing of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms

The Institute for the State and the Law by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is organizing a one-day international academic forum titled “Conference dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of the Signing of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms”, which will take place on Thursday, November 13, 2025, in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The conference is dedicated to the most important regional international treaty for the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, signed on November 4, 1950, under the auspices of the Council of Europe. Based on this treaty, the European Court of Human Rights was established — the main regional jurisdiction within the so-called “greater Europe” of the 46 member states of the Council of Europe. The ECHR has had a significant impact on the respect for human rights as one of the core values of this oldest European regional organization. The conference will bring together politicians, scholars, and practitioners to analyze case law, challenges, and the future of the ECHR. The event will bring together politicians, scholars, and legal practitioners to analyze the Court’s case law, the challenges it faces, and the future of the Convention.

Working languages: Bulgarian and English.

The conference will be held in a hybrid format, allowing for both in-person participation and online attendance. The in-person event will take place at the Grand Hall “Prof. Marin Drinov” at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

All accepted papers will be published in a special edition, subject to approval by the editorial board.

The fee for participants presenting a paper is 100 BGN.

A duly completed application form must be submitted by October 31, 2025 to the official conference email:

The application must include:

• an abstract of the paper in both Bulgarian and English

• a scanned copy of the payment receipt

All submitted applications will be reviewed by the Organizing Committee, and confirmation of acceptance will be sent explicitly to approved participants.

The final conference program will be sent to participants on November 7, 2025.
